Hallmark Pen and Pencil

It was very disappointing in the 80s when Hallmark quit making these fine pen and pencils. Here are the ones I have. They are from the 70s and 80s and were well made. Some of these are made from walnut and some from maple. All still work except the flair type refillable pen on the right. The pens will take a cross refill but require a plastic sleeve to convert in the barrel. Pencils used .09 mm lead. Hallmark had some type of buyback program for pen and pencil customers who at the time could not find refills. I had contacted them about refills for the flair type pen and they wanted to buyback the pen or exchange it for something. I said no thanks.

  2. Where can you get the sleeve to convert the pens for using a cross refill? I haven't used my pen in ages - and the pencil needs to be repaired. I'd love to put them both back in action - I've had them since 1972, a present from my father when I was 16 . . . how time flies.

  3. Dan, your best bet is to start a blog. If I can do it, anybody can.

Cate, Last time I saw them was on Ebay, ran about $12.00.

  5. Of the eight pens pictured above, I think mine is the fourth from the left. What must I do to obtain a refill? The point is a 15WP500 with a number 8293 on it.

  9. George,
I have a Hallmark BP in walnut and have requested a adp for the cross from them. The bottom of the barrel has two cracks and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to repair them? Also have the roller ball and I I asked Hallmark about a refill for that. You said they made an offer to buy it back? What did they offer? I guess in exchange they don't make these pens anymore??
    Thx, Jocko

  10. The deal which was some time ago was for you to trade in your roller ball pen and they would give you a ball point pen. I could not tell you who could fix one. They do not make them anymore but they are on ebay and Hallmark may still do a trade. You will have to ask.

  11. Great site! I have a Hallmark Pen and Pencil set - a graduation gift from (gulp!) 1972. I went to the Hallmark web site and and found that you can request pen adapter ADP0000 so you can use the very common Cross refills. I will update here when it arrives.

  13. Been collecting these fine writing instruments- going for all five wood types; only problem is most do not have the type of wood id tags, can anybody help? Thanks in advance...

  14. I would try for the new ones that still have the label. A old catalog would also help, maybe contact the company. Still a great idea to find all the woods.

    1. Thanks again, George, Lately I was able to gather up a WALNUT, TEAK, CORDIA and TULIPWOOD- all with wood type tags! The only remainder (WENGE) wood, falls into place by the process of elimination; allthought my last CORDIA sets looks fairly close to the WENGE description of cocoa brown.
Now I hope to stop my ebay-holic binge.

  15. Glad I could help. Hallmark Pens are one of the most visited posts at My Supply Room and for good reason. They were and still are a great pen and pencil.

  16. Thank you for your blog! I have a Hallmark pencil, w/ great sentimental value as it was my father's before his passing. I tried to replace the lead w/ .07 and seem to have made matters worse. I can't seem to refill it. The twist movement has been smooth for decades, now it's rough. I tried to refill by turning counterclockwise, insert lead and twist clockwise while having tip flat on a hard surface. I thought this would secure the lead in the holder. I used to be able to see the very end if turned all the way clockwise, no longer the case. Ugh.

I need help, the refill methods for "today" pencils don't apply here. I've already scratched it trying to disassemble.
How do you disassemble properly? Do I need to do this to "clean up" the old broken lead bits? How do you refill then?

All help very much welcome! I love this pencil.

    1. Not sure without looking at it. Is there someone in your area that deals in pencils or pens that may help. You can send it to me and I will try looking at it. You could also buy one on ebay and switch the parts out so your will work. I have done that before.

  19. There was another limited edition wood pen called Briarwood. It looks like either a curly or birdseye type of grain. Very tight grain with lots of swirls

  20. This is a great blog! I have an Oak set,Red Oak I believe, that I received when I graduated in 1986. I've been trying to refill the pencil and discovered from this site that I have the wrong lead size.I thought there was something wrong with it. Any idea where to get the little eraser? I always carry them with me but don't use them often because the refills were so hard to get. Thanks for the info!

  21. First call the Hallmark people and see if they have any on hand. Use their 1-800 number. Model number appears to be 65wp1-2.Next keep checking ebay and see if someone is selling their erasers. Last email me at moose@hot.rr.com and I will send you one eraser to make the pencil complete. You should never use these old erasers. They are just for show. To many good stand alone erasers out there.

  22. George, I just figured out how to adapt a Pentel G2 .5mm refill into my newly eBay acquired soft tip/rollerball Walnut pen w/cap (far right in your pic). The soft tip felt refill went dry and I tried using a bunch of different rollerball refills but they wouldn't work as-is.

I used the black plastic nib of an existing Hallmark soft tip refill as the spacer for the G2 refill. I pulled out the nib & felt tip from the metal barrel then I removed the felt tip from the nib (with tweezers & pliers, it was easy). I then drilled out the nib in a vise, I started with a small drill bit (1/16"), then finally up to the size that let the G2 shaft tip barely slide in. The next thing to do was to cut down the back of the nib (with razor blade) to allow the G2 tip protrude far enough down the nib to expose properly to write. You don't have to alter the pen in any way. The nib will be reusable when you want to use future refills.

The next thing you'll need to make is a stopper at the top of the pen so the refill does not fall back into the barrel every time you try to write. I use a plastic tube cap that came off one of my Rollerball refills. Using a razor blade, I kept cutting it down till I had taken the gap out so the two parts of the barrel just barely screw back together tightly. I actually prefer Pentel Precise V5 refills but I will need to make another nib to make it fit properly, it's slightly different than the G2. The stopper length is approx. .35" (8.5mm) and the nib was cut down to approx.: 22mm (5.5mm)

It was easy and is now an excellent daily writer. You just need a a pair of pliers, tweezers, an old soft tip refill, a vise to hold the nib when drilling, 1/16", 5/64" & 3/32" drill bit and a sharp razor blade. It took me 10 mins to do the first one. I have photo's if you would like to see. I hope this is useful info.

  27. I have a ‘Lady’s Tulipwood’ Hallmark pen. I am unable to remove the ‘cap’ to put in a refill. Is the ‘cap’ the silver bit st the top of the pen? I’ve got an adapter coming from Hallmark, but I don’t know how to open the pen to be able to put in a refill. Can you help?
